[Part 2] How to Grow Your Email List by 100,000 Contacts

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who nominated their friends, family, and co-workers for our challenge to grow one lucky candidate’s email list to 100,000 contacts in just one year. We had a huge outpouring of responses; talked with a lot of great candidates; and you guys actually convinced us to take on more than one person. And that’s great for everyone reading this because it gives us the opportunity to share more examples with you of how to increase your email list by 100k contacts in different industries without the following:

  • A widely known brand
  • A ton of website visitors
  • Or require you to pull favors and leverage your relationships

This way you won’t have to wonder… “Well that worked great for them, but what about me?”.

What We’ll Do

We started working with several different businesses on this challenge over the past couple of weeks. In future blogs, I will introduce you to the businesses that we picked and share their progress but in the mean time, I want to share with you what it is that we will be doing to grow their lists to 100,000 people, including the strategy behind this campaign, and show you a case study of it in action.

Let’s get started.

Over the past 4 years, we’ve worked in many industries with many different clients and we’ve found that for most businesses, Facebook is the cheapest source of leads. In our experience, leads generally cost between $1-3 to generate depending on the offer. Today, we’ve come across a way of generating leads that has been cheaper than any other approach that we have tried––advertising quizzes on Facebook. This breakthrough has made it possible for us to generate leads for $0.19-$0.50/lead.

Also, did you know that as far as email lists go, it’s very reasonable to generate income of $1/email/month with the right sales funnel? Are you seeing how valuable this could be for your business?

But wait, there’s more!

Quizzes are also a great way to segment your leads based on who is qualified to buy from you, where they stand in the buying cycle, and learn what interests are most important to them. Did you know that by segmenting your contacts like this and putting them in an automated sales funnels (or handing them over to your sales team) can drive 18x more revenue than advertising to everyone in the same way?

So think about this a little more. Let’s say you spend $1,000 in ad spend over the course of a month and you are able to generate a lead for $0.50, and immediately after they take your quiz, you offer them a product for $47. How many sales would you have to generate to break even on your ad spend?

On that $1,000 in ad spend you would capture 2,000 leads and each of them would see your $47 offer. All you would have to sell is 22 products to break even. That’s about a 1% conversion. Sound do-able? Absolutely!

And once you at least break even, you can scale up this ad spend to grow your email list very quickly. So do you think you can add 100,000 subscribers to your email list using this process in a year? (Because I think it would take less time.)

And remember, once someone’s on your list and you nurture them with educational, inspirational, and entertaining content, you’ll create a relationship with them and they’ll be more predisposed to buy from you. And if they’ve already bought something from you (like your $47 product), they’re 60-70% more likely to buy from you again. So you don’t need to hit a home run selling $47 products because you will sell them additional products later on. You just need to get on base and breakeven for this to be EXTREMELY successful. Honestly, the trouble that most people have is that they can’t get in front of enough qualified leads on a consistent basis. Most people don’t have 50,000 – 100,000 visitors hitting their website every month. And most people can’t experiment by spending $1,000+ each day on advertising to sell their products. Creating an email list allows you to constantly get in front of the right people without having to pay huge sums of money all the time.

Now imagine being able to hit the New York Times Best Seller list with your new book because you have a huge platform of raving fans that will buy it from you! Imagine the impact you can have by reaching 100,000+ people’s inboxes every single week. Imagine the momentum that could create for your business!

But it all comes back to getting that base hit. Breaking even. Then scaling up.

Now let me show you the sales funnel we are going to set up to make this work:

It’s pretty simple.

  1. Show people a Facebook ad.
  2. Drive them to a simple landing page that tells them what they will get out of taking the quiz.
  3. At the end of the quiz, ask for their name and email to get their results.
  4. Once they see their results, give some suggestions about how to improve their current state – one of which is the product you are selling.
  5. If they’re interested, they click through to your sales page which takes them to an order page and a thank you page upon completion of their purchase.
